Day 1 - Proposal

December 2nd, 2006.

To build an application that adapts proximity to a visual context; outside of numerical form.

The application will measure proximity by relating two opposing colors representing hot (red) and cold (blue) between two Bluetooth enabled devices.

Thoughts / Issues/ Breadcrumbs:

  • Bluetooth connectivity - how to?
  • Processing mobile is it viable?
  • Issues with mobile devices / compatibilty.

Day 2 - Ideas

December 4th, 2006.

After a few hours of studying and finding resources I was able to come up with the following:

Testing Processing Mobile applications on OS X is a pain. Period. Direct Bluetooth connectivity with certain newer Macs is flakey at best; the host device must only support the Bluetooth 1.0 standard for direct connectivity between two devices.

Things to do before development begins:

  • View the Processing Mobile discourse for further resources.

Day 3 - Idea Melding

December 5th, 2006.

Phew! Everything is finally starting to fall into place. Initial Bluetooth connectivity tests proved that making a direct connection between two devices wasn't as difficult as initially planned.

Design assets and usability architecture are currently being sketched up, with a finalzed plan following sometime tomorrow or the day after.

Thoughts / Issues/ Breadcrumbs:

  • Finish design/usability issues by tomorrow.
  • Go outside. It's really nice out...
  • Research color palette for proximity (cold blue, hot red.)

Day 4 - Development Begins

December 6th, 2006.

First things first: all design assets and usability issues have been evaluted and corrected. Currently, the application will be built with placeholders for *hopefully* future functions such as messaging and user-customization.

Secondly, I've decided that the current edition of Bluenose will only work with Nokia phones running the Symbian OS. While this may not matter for testing purposes directly, it may matter when actually finding a potential testing audience.

Thoughts / Issues/ Breadcrumbs:

  • Mutiple device connectivity - pairing devices?

Day 5 - Development

December 8th, 2006.

After ten hours of initial development, Bluenose is... well, alive! Currently it's in a non-functional state, but it's sending and receiving a Bluetooth signal accordingly.

As of this writing, Bluenose looks to be on schedule for a pre-alpha release for Thursday, December 14th, 2006.

To do:

  • Add user input functions
  • Develop Bluetooth communication signal.

Day 12 - Development Midpoint (Alpha 1)

December 13th, 2006.

After several venti-sized caramel machiados from the local Starbucks, and a few late nights, Bluenose has reached an alpha stage.

Commmunication testing between two specific Bluetooth devices (Nokia 6682 and a G5) have produced amazing I/O results thus far; mainly due to the Symbian Bluetooth communication library.

Thoughts / Issues/ Breadcrumbs:

  • I/O interfacing with design assets.
  • Alpha "in-progress" Quicktime video - coming soon.

Day 13 - Bluenose video

December 14th, 2006.

Well, time to prove to the world that this actually works!

Without further ado, check out the Bluenose Alpha 1 video here.

To do:

  • Finish up user-centric design proposal
